Introduction to Badaguan Scenic Area (八大关)

Built in 1931, covers 67 acres consisting of ten roads that are each lined with distinct species of trees and flowers, Qingdao Badaguan scenic area is a famous picturesque sanitarium area in China. 

It is a must see for visitors to Qingdao. Badaguan is known as the World Architecture Museum for the large numbers of European villas that criss-cross this scenic area.It is sometimes referred to as "little Switzerland."

This place used to have eight avenues that were named after eight famous passes in China. The name “Badaguan” refers to eight roads named after eight famous passes in China. Thus, it was named Badaguan, which means eight passes. They are Shaoguan Road, Jiayuguan Road, Hanguguan Road, Zhengyangguan Road, Linhuaiguan Road, Niwuguan Road, Zijinguan Road and Juyongguan Road, crisscross to form a large scenic part of the city.Each street is lined with its own distinct species of tree giving the area an annual spectacular Autumn show of colors.

This scenic area was once a place where people from more than twenty countries, such as Germany, the United States of America, Russia, Britain, France, Denmark, Greece, Spain, Switzerland, Japan and etc., constructed buildings in each of their unique national styles. Badaguan features the architectural styles of more than twenty countries and regions.

What makes Badaguan tour so popular is not just its natural scenery, but also its garden-like villas and foreign styled buildings. Many leaders of the Chinese Communist Party and foreign friends of China have stayed in Badaguan for rehabilitation or simply, for pleasure.After the People's Liberation in 1949, the government repaired the entire area and its buildings, symbolizing Badaguan's significance as one of the most important sanitaria in China.

Travel Tips 

1. Try to avoid visiting Badaguan Scenic Area during the summer holidays and Golden Week in October as it will be extremely crowded.
