the Liao Dynasty and continued to be expanded and renovated from the Jin, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Throughout the different dynasties Behai Park was a beautiful imperial garden used only by the imperial family. Located in Central Beijing, Beihai Park covers a surface are of 71.4 hectares of which half is water. The layout and design of Beihai Park was based upon a legendary story known as “The Rise of the East Sea”. Qiongdao Island

Qiongdao Island is connected to the Circular City via the Yong’an Bridge which was built in the 13th century. The highlight of Qiongdao Island has to be the White Dagoba which dates back to 1651. The Dagoba is 35.9 meters high with a tiered base and a body like an upturned bowl. Sutras in Tibetan language are carved inside the front gate. Fourteen copper bells hang from its copper canopy on top.

North Shore

The North Shore of Beihai Park is famous for its pavilions, screens and rock landscaping. The Quiet Heart Studio (Jinxinzhai) is one of the more famous small gardens of Beihai Park. Originally built in the Ming Dynasty the garden is well known for its beautiful rock landscapes incorporated with flowing streams and intricate pavilions. Another highlight of the North Shore is the Nine Dragon Screen made in 1756. The screen is five meters in height, 1.2 meters thick and 27 meters in length and was built using glazed color bricks.
