Introduction to Beijing Zoo

Beijing Zoo is a zoological park in Beijing which is also a center of zoological research that studies and breeds rare animals from various continents. Situated in Xicheng District of Beijing, the Beijing Zoo was the first of its kind to be opened in China. Beijing Zoo contains a diverse collection of animals, a lot of exhibition halls and sites of historical interest. Beijing Zoo is famous for its collection of rare animals endemic in China which includes the Giant Pandas, which are zoo's most popular animals.

The Beijing zoo is home to around 450 different species and has a population of some 5,000 animals. Some of the most popular attractions among visitors are the wild and rare animals of China itself, golden monkeys, Milu deer and northeast tigers. However, the collection is far from restricted to those species found only in China. The Polar Bears, American Bison, Zebras, Kangaroos, Giraffes and Elephants also attract large numbers of visitors.

After Beijing became the capital of the China in 1949, the city government changed the Beijing Agricultural Experimentation Center to Western Suburban Park and it gradually started rebuilding the zoo. The park was renamed Beijing Zoo in 1955. The Beijing Zoo sent staff to study zoo management in the Soviet Union and Poland, and began to trade animals with Eastern Bloc countries, Japan, Burma, India, and Indonesia to expand its collection. Famous Chinese universities also established research in the zoo to study animal behavior in order to breed endangered species.

With the support of the Chinese government and having undergone continual development throughout its 90 years of history, Beijing Zoo has become one of the largest zoos in China. It provides thousands with the opportunity to see and learn about the strange and exotic species.
