Introduction to Guia Fortress (东望洋炮台)

The Guia Fortress was built between 1622 and 1638 due to attempts of the Dutch to invade and seize Macau from the Portuguese. The fortress is made up of lighthouse and the Guia Chapel known as Capela de Nossa Senhora da Guia in Portuguese.

The Guia lighthouse dates back to 1865 and was the first ever lighthouse on the coasts of China. The symbolism of the lighthouse celebrates the military, maritime and missionary past of Macau. Today the lighthouse remains the most prominent attractions standing at 15 meters tall.

For those who don’t want to make the trek up Dongwangyang Mountain, there is a cable car ride available. For those who want to see a panoramic view of Macau then you definitely don’t want to miss out on the cable car ride.

Travel Tips

1. Recommended duration for a visit is about 2 hours.

2. It is not recommended to visit there during “May 1st” and “October 1st” these two golden vacation weeks. Because at that time, the hotel reservation and transportation will be in its climax, the price will be much higher than ordinary times.
