Introduction to Gyantze Dzong (江孜宗山抗英遗址) Gyantze Dzong or Gyantze Fortress is one of the best preserved Dzongs in Tibet. It is said that the Dzong walls were first built in 1268 and in 1365 a palace was built by Phakpa Pelzangpo who was campaigning for Sakyapa Sect in the south. The fortress is famous for the heroic defense by the Tibetans against the British Invasion between 1903 and 1904. The fortress was badly damaged after the British Invasion and was further damaged by the Cultural Revolution in 1967. Restoration efforts have been successful with some parts of the fortress being restored. |
