Introduction to Hangzhou Bay Sea Crossing Bridge As a sea-crossing highway bridge connecting the Zhengjiadai in Jiaxing City in the north to the Shuiluwan in Ningbo City in the south of Zhengjiang Province, Hangzhou Bay Sea Crossing Bridge (or Hangzhou Bay Bridge) with cable-stayed portion is the second sea-crossing bridge in China. The bridge was started to be built in November 14, 2003, then its openning ceremony was held on June, 26, 2007, and it was officially opened to the public at 11:58 PM on May, 1, 2008 after several considerable tests and evaluations. With the total length of 36 kilometers, Hangzhou Bay Sea Crossing Bridge is renowned as the longest sea-crossing bridge in the world and the second longest bridge in the world behind the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway in America. The bridge was firstly brought in the concept of landscape design with S-shaped structure and a 12,000-square-meter platform, making it the best place to appreciate the beautiful landscapes along the Hangzhou Bay. There is service center called Land between the Sea and the Sky in the middle section of the bridge. With a large scale of about 10,000 square meters, the center consists of a restaurant, a gas station, a hotel, a lookout tower, a resting room and a conference room. The tourists can enjoy the amazing tide from the tower. There are many significances for the construction of the bridge. One of the most important effects is that it greatly reduces the travel time between Ningbo and Shanghai from 4 hours to 2 hours by shortening the highway distance from 400 kilometers to 180 kilometers. |
