Introduction to Hanyang Tomb

Hanyang Tomb, also known as Mausoleum of Western Han Emperor Liu Qi, is located at Zhangjiawan Village, Zhengyang Town, Xianyang City of Shaanxi Province. It is about 20 kilometers away from Xian downtown. The Hanyang Tomb is a joint tomb of Liu Qi, a respectable emperor of Western Han Dynasty (206 BC – 220AD), and his empress Wang. Now the tomb has been built into a modern integrate museum that is featured with unique architectural style, exquisite decorations and advanced facilities.

Hanyang Tomb was constructed in 153 A.D. and it covers an area of 20 square kilometers. This is quite a large-scale mausoleum, consisting of the emperor’s tomb, empress’ tomb, the south and north burial pits, ceremonial site, human sacrifice graveyard and criminals’ cemetery. The Hanyang Tomb was constructed according to the strict hierarchical social structure with the emperor’s tomb situated in the center and the other tombs and buildings neatly arranged around.

The size of the emperor’s tomb is much large than other buildings. It was designed with tall walls around the tomb on each side and each wall has big gate in the middle. Around the emperor’s tomb, there found 86 outside pits of different sizes. At these pits there have excavated many precious burial objects.

The Outside Pits Exhibition Hall in the Hanyang Tomb is the first underground museum in China. It was opened to the public in 2006. Covering 7,850 square meters, this underground museum was made into a modern museum to exhibit and preserve precious objects unearthed from Hanyang Tomb.
