Helan Mountain Rock Art
Introduction to Helan Mountain Rock Art (贺兰山岩画)
Helan Mountain is a large range of mountains extending for 250 kilometers from north to south and forming the border of Inner Mongolia and Ningxia. On the eastern side of the mountain, thousands of ancient rock carvings have been discovered. The engravings depict daily rituals, such as hunting, pasturing, dancing, copulation, battle, and even sacrifice. They were created by various nationalities in northern China, approximately between 3,000 and 10,000 years ago.
Many of the rock carvings depict a large variety of animals including cattle, sheep, horse, camel, tiger and leopard. Also a wide range of abstract symbols were found which reveal the cultural connotations of totem worship for the ancient people. The main concentration of carvings in the Helan Mountain is at Helankou Valley with over 20 engraving sites.
Helan Mountain Rock Art is now a major historical and cultural site protected at the national level. Classified as a AAAA tourist attraction, these pristine rock paintings of Helan Mountain are equal to the best ancient rock paintings in other parts of the world. They open a window into the early civilization.
