Huaisheng Mosque

Huaisheng Mosque is one of the four oldest mosques in China and also one of the major mosques in Guangzhou. The Huangsheng Mosque is also called Guangta Mosque of Light Tower Mosque. For tourists traveling to Guangzhou, especially for Muslim tourists, the Huaisheng Mosque is a must-see attraction.

Huangsheng literally means ‘remembering the saint’ in Chinese and the Huangsheng Mosque was constructed to commemorate the prophet of Islam Mohammed. The mosque was originally constructed in Tang Dynasty (618-907) and it was rebuilt several times.

With an occupation of 3,000 square meters, the main buildings of Huangsheng complex are consisted of the main hall, Wangyue Budiling, east and west galleries, scripture-store room, stele pavilion, Xuanli Tower and some other facilities.

Huaisheng Mosque was built to face south in the symmetrical layout of Chinese traditional style. Decorations and colors of the Western Asia styles were applied to the construction. The main hall of the mosque is situated in the center of the mosque and it cover an area of 400 square meters.

The Light Tower is the most outstanding building in Huaisheng Mosque. The tower was built with green bricks in a round bottom and coated gray sands in the surface. Its marnet has a height of 36 meters in the classic Arabic style. Small holes are adorned in the boday of the tower for lighting. This light tower was used for the service of navigation for ships on the Zhujiang River when sailors climbing up the tower for the observation of weather conditions.

Huaisheng Mosque plays an important role in Guangzhou Muslim community and it is one of the major activity center for Muslims in Guangzhou. It is where Guangzhou Islamic Association seated.
