Introduction to Huanglong Nature Reserve (黄龙风景名胜区)
Huanglong is a scenic and historic interest area in Songpan County in the northwest part of Sichuan, China. It is located in the southern part of the Minshan mountain range, 150 km northwest of Chengdu.
Huanglong Scenic Area in Sichuan is well known for its colorful pools formed by calcite deposits, especially in Huanglong Valley (Yellow Dragon Valley), as well as diverse forest ecosystems, snow-capped peaks, waterfalls and hot springs. Huanglong is also home to many endangered species including the Giant Panda and the Sichuan Golden Snub-nosed Monkey. In 1992, Huanglong national scenic area was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Due to thousands of years of geological evolution, huanglong scenic and historic interest area consists?of numerous unique landscapes of geological landforms. Glacial revolution, terrane structure, stratum of carbonic acid rock, tufa water and climatic conditions such as artic-alpine sun light have created this world-famous travertine landscape.
Huanglong Valley (黄龙沟)
The total length of the travertine in Huanglong Valley is 3.6 km and it is thought to look like a huge golden dragon wheeling through the snow-capped mountains of the valley. The main landscapes are travertine banks, colorful ponds and travertine waterfalls and caves.
The main body of water starts from the ancient Benbo temple at the top of the valley and ends at the Guests Welcome Pond in the north with a length of 2.5 km and a width of 30–170m. The colours of Huanglong’s waters consist of yellows, greens, blues and browns.
Colored Pools (五彩池)
Colored pools, situated 4,166 metres away from Fuyuan Bridge, enjoy 693 pools, and are considered the largest pool groups of Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area, as well as the essence and highlights here. Due to the low dike of the pool, limpid water overflows as if they were blue discs. How marvelous the scenery is! On sunny days, the discs are glistening; when it comes to the winter, while Huanglong Scenic and Historic Interest Area turns to a sea of ice, the coloured pools at the highest sea level still remain green. Seen from afar, they are jades scattered in the earth, thus being known as the Earth Jade.
Huanglong Ancient Temple (黄龙古寺)
It is about 3.5 kilometers far from the entrance of HuanglongValley. Visitors can relax at the middle temple. It is said that Huanglong Temple was the place where Immortal Huanglong cultivated himself. There are five halls in the middle temple, with an area of 1000 square meters. The present Buddha Hall lies at the middle temple. It has the altitude of 3558 meters and the area of 2100 square meters. The images of the eighteen Arahants are preserved well in the Buddha Hall. The buildings of the temple preserve well up till now.
Body Washing Grotto(洗身洞)
Located on the second stairs of Huanglong, it is a grotto of the lower part of a forty-wide travertine surface. At the entrance, mist prevails as if it were a veil. In the grotto, drops of water spray into your face, making all figures in front of you while invisible. Legend has it that it is for the immortal to wash their body, and that infertile women can get pregnant after washing there.

1. There are shuttle buses from the airport to Jiuzhaigou (45 Yuan for single trip, it will take you about 1 hour 30 minutes) and Huanglong (CNY 22 for single trip, it will take about 1 hour).
2. It will take you about 40 minutes to arrive in Chengdu by plane from Jiuzhaigou Huanglong Airport.
1. The altitude of Huanglong is quite high, therefore, you'd better not to do strenuous exercise.
2. The temperature is different a lot during the day and the night, so you should take warm clothing.
3. Please respect the customs and habits of the local minorities and avoid unnecessary conflicts.
