Introduction to Maijishan Grottoes (麦积山石窟)

The Maijishan Grottoes are a series of 194 caves carved into the side of the Majishan Mountain in Tianshui, Gansu Province. The grottoes contain over 7,200 Buddhist sculptures and over 1,000 square meters of murals. The Maijishan Grottoes were explored by an archaeology team from Beijing between 1952 and 1953. The caves are located on the western and eastern cliff faces. The name Maijishan translates as "Wheatstack Mountain" and the mountain is formed of purplish red sandstone. In 2014 Maijishan Mountain was enlisted was a World Heritage Site.  Maijishan Grottoes is one of the four famous grottoes in China. The other grottoes are Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, Yungang Caves in Datong, and Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang.
