Mutianyu Great Wall Introduction (慕田峪长城) Mutianyu is located in Beijing’s Huairou District, 73 kilometers from Beijing. The Mutianyu section is one of the newest 16 tourist attractions in Beijing and one of the most symbolic parts of the Great Wall of China. Mutianyu has a unique construction with densely located Watch Towers and important mountain passes. The other famous sections such as Jiankou, Ox Horn Edge and Ying Fei Dao Yang are all located to the west of Mutianyu. This section is mountainous and 90% is covered by trees and orchards. Dating back to 550-577 B.C. the Mutianyu Great Wall was built in the Northern Qi Dynasty and later restored in the Ming Dynasty. This section of the wall is built mainly with the use of granite and was once the northern barrier to protect the imperial tombs. Today, Mutianyu is said to be the best preserved section and the best construction quality in comparison with the other parts of the Great Wall. Mutianyu is 22 kilometers in length and 5 meters wide with a total of 22 watchtowers. |
