Introduction to One Hundred and Eight Stupas(青铜峡108塔) One Hundred and Eight Stupas is an array of one hundred and eight Buddhist stupas standing on the hillside on the west bank of Qingtong Gorge in Wuzhong, West China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. The stupas is believed to be originally constructed during West Xia (1038A.D. - 1227A.D.),although with no definite records. To develop as a tourist site, the large area of land between the stupas and the Yellow River has been paved over and landscaped with ponds. A tourist reception centre and a exhibition hall have been erected. In the exhibition hall showcase the history of the stupas and the photographs of what is used to be like before renovation in the 1980s.
The 108 stupas were arranged in a triangular formation on the hill facing southeast. There is one large stupa at the top point of the triangle, behind which is a Buhhist Hall. The allocation of stupas in each level is: 1,3,3,5,5,7,9,11,13,15,17,19, all in odd number which are regarded as auspicious in Buddism. |
