Peace Hotel has been a famous landmark of Shanghai for decades with its prime location along The Bund. The hotel has been known for its gothic architecture and its composition of eastern and western designs. Peace hotel was divided into the South Building and North Building. Building of the north building began in 1926 and was named Sassoon House after its owner, Sir Victor Sassoon. The hotel was opened on September 5, 1929 it was then known as Cathay Hotel where floors four to nine were the hotel.
The South Building of Peace Hotel can be dated back to the 1850’s and was previously known as Central Hotel. In 1903 the hotel was rebuilt and was given the new name Palace Hotel and back then it was the tallest building located on Nanjing Road. The South Building still retains its Renaissance design and its completion in 1908 with two elevators installed it was the first building in Shanghai to have such a facility. The hotel played a major role in history over the coming decades.
Cathay hotel quickly gained recognition as the most glamorous “Number One Mansion in the Far East”. Back in its days the hotel was certainly one of the only hotels that could be so grand and luxurious with its Italian marble floors, Lalique glass artwork, and copper-sheathed roof that rose 77 meters above the ground. The Cathay Hotel was first choice for politicians, entrepreneurs, Chinese officials and celebrities visiting Shanghai. Famous guests of the hotel included Charlie Chaplin, Bernard Shaw and General Marshall. The hotel also had an Old Jazz Bar which was popular with the foreign expatriates.
In 1992, Peace Hotel was listed as one of the famous hotels of the world by the World Hotel Association. It remains the only hotel in China to have received this recognition.
Getting to Peace Hotel
Take subway line 2 getting off at Nanjing Road East Station, leaving the station via Exit 2, walk approximately 610 meters and you will reach Peace Hotel.
