Introduction to Qianmen Street  (前门大街)

Qianmen, meaning “Front Gate” in Chinese, is a famous street located to the south of the Tiananmen Square, just along the Beijing central axis. The Qianmen Street is one of the oldest and the most famous commercial center of Beijing which has a history of more than 500 years. Transformed into a shopping pedestrian street, Qianmen has many time-honored stores like Quanjude Roast Duck Restaurant which is the exact place to have a nice stroll.

Qianmen Street was called Zhengyangmen Street when first built in 1419 during the Ming Dynasty and became a prosperous market in the Qing Dynasty, mostly selling food, clothes, jewelries and crafts. There were also theaters, tea houses and even lantern fairs on special occasions. The ancient Qianmen Street suffered considerable damage when the Eight-Nation Alliance invaded the city in 1900. The present Qianmen Street has been rebuilt and now divided into different zones for culture, food, shopping and entertainment.
