Introduction to Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street (上下九步行街)

Shangxiajiu Pedestrian Street is one of the most popular commercial centers in Guangzhou. As the first commercial pedestrian street in Guangzhou, Shangxiajiu has more than 300 stores and shops along the street in the length of 1,237 meters.

Shangxiajiu Street is a beautiful picture of a collection of Xiguan style. Located in the old town of Xiguan, it stretches from Shangjiu Road and Xiajiu Road in the east to Dishifu Road in the west. The street is a showcase of traditional Cantonese architecture, especially pretty at night when lit up. All the shops here are Qilou or sotto porticos (a building structure of South-China’s construction style), which make the open market weatherproof. 

Shangxiajiu is composed of the unique and historical architecture based on Tong Lau and teahouses, featuring the characteristics of European and Chinese styles. It has a group of old famous stores, and also has some well-known restaurants, including the Guangzhou Restaurant, the Taotaoju Restaurant, Wenchang Chicken, and Taotao Ginger and Onion Chicken.  

Dishifu Road
Dishifu Road is a famous attraction on the Shang Xia Jiu Shopping Street and it is known for its Ping An Theater which showcases Chinese Opera as well as its many Cantonese restaurants. Next is Xiajiu Road. Other than regular range of clothing and snack stores, this street is also home to several smaller department stores as well as jewelry store catering to women. Shangxiajiu Square is another attraction which is quite modern and has many shopping destinations like Saibo Shopping Center, Dongji Mall and Liwan Plaza.

Liwan Plaza
Among the many malls and department stores located on the Shangxiajiu Pedestrain Street, Liwas Plaza is very popular and a great place to shop. The mall has several restaurants and breakfast cafes serving up great dim sum at affordable price. The Shangxiajiu Shopping Street also has a mix of department stores, fashion accessory stores, clothing stores and brand name stores. There are many buildings packed with various market stalls where visitor can bargain to find great deals on local clothes and products.

Qingping Market
South of the Shangxiajiu are several markets, alleyways and avenues like the Qingping Market. The outdoor and indoor area of this market stretches over an area of around 1,000 meters and is a great place to find various good deals. Visitors will find several interesting items in this market such as Chinese products like medicines, dried herbs, scorpions, snakes, artwork, pets, nuts, seafood and other bizarre items.
