Simatai Great Wall Introduction

Simatai Great Wall is located in Miyun County which is 120 kilometers from Beijing. It is the only section of the Great Wall that has preserved the original Ming Dynasty architecture. Simatai was first constructed in the 6th century and later rebuilt by General Qi Jiguang of the Ming Dynasty. This section is 5.4 kilometers in length and has 35 beacon towers and the steepness of the wall is the distinctive features of Simatai. In 1987 Simatai Great Wall was enlisted into UNESCO Heritage Sites.

Simatai can be divided into two sections the east and the west due to a valley which now connects both sections with a chain bridge. The western section is characterized with 20 watchtowers with the notable General’s Tower that has a Jade Kylin embossment. The eastern section of Simatai is extremely steep and therefore more watchtowers were built to ensure safety. The Fairy Tower is perhaps one of the highlights of the eastern section due to its detailed marble arches with intricately carved lotus flowers.
