Introduction to Thousand Islets Lake (千岛湖)

Thousand Islets Lake is a major attraction in Hangzhou and also a must-see tourist site for tourist go on Hangzhou tour. Thousand Islets Lake is located in Chun’an County, which is in western suburb of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province. It is about 129 kilometers away from Hangzhou and 140 kilometers away from the famous Mount Huang.

Thousand Islets Lake derived its name from the 1078 islets in the lake. It is the largest man-made lake in China. With the fresh air, crystal clear water, picturesque lake views and many tourist sites, Thousand Islets Lake is an ideal place to enjoy beautiful landscapes and have a relaxed pleasant time.

With 81% area of the scenic area covered in forest, the Thousand Islets Lake is noted for its large variety of plants species. There are more than 1,800 types of plants and 2,100 wild animals in the area. Also the lake has about 83 varieties of fishes. With an average depth of 34 meters, the lake has a water visibility of 7-12 meters. The water quality is very good in the lake. One of China’s famous mineral water brand Nonfu Spring uses water from the Thousand Islets Lake as resource.

Thousand Islets Lake has abundant tourist resources including natural scenery and historical sites.

One of the spectacular sight in the lake is the ancient underwater cities – He Cheng and Shi Cheng, which were built in 208 AD and 621 AD. These two cities were submerged when a dam was constructed. Tourists can visit the underwater cities by joining a tour with large qualified diving club.

The Chun’an Stone Forest which is located in the southwest of Thousand Islets Lake is one of China’s four stone forests. It attracts tourists with its artistic masterpieces of stone statues.

Besides those gorgeous scenery in the lake, there are also many entertaining activities tourists can do. There are many beautiful islands like the Meifeng Island where tourists can go adventure. Also there is a large fishing pond where tourists can enjoy fishing, or take a boat cruise among the lake to the islands, or have a biking around the lake for fun.

Travel Tips 

  • Better not visit there in Chinese festivals for it will be extremly crowded.
  • Kids under 1.2 meters height: no charge for entrance and ferry ticket.
  • Bikes are available to rent.
  • Exciting kayaking drift is provided on the north of Thousand Islets Lake.
  • Monkeys are free-range bred on Monkey Island. Be careful not to harm them or be harmed.
