Shanhaiguan Great Wall Introduction to Tibetan Opera (藏戏)

Tibetan Opera
is also known as Ace Lhamo is one of the most distinguished and popular minority operas in China. Tibetan Opera has a history of over 1,400 years and is said to have developed due to King Songstan Gambo’s admiration of the Tang Dynasty music and dance brought to Tibet by Princess Wencheng. King Songstan Gambo then arranged for 16 beautiful dancers to be trained to combine the Tang style dance with Tibetan dancing and music for the entertainment of Princess Wencheng.

With the progression of time this laid the foundation for the Tibetan Opera. The opera consists of songs, dance and a storyline which is derived from Buddhist teachings and Tibetan history. Each performance begins with purification. The best opporunities to see Tibetan Opera is during the
Shoton Festival and the biggest performance is held at Norbulingka during the festival.
