Introduction to Tin Hau Festival Celebrations

You will experience many festivals when you come to Hong Kong during spring, among which Tin Hau Festival is the most impressive one. Tin Hau is a sea goddess worshiped by fishermen in the coastal regions of Guangdong and Fujian Province. She is believed to be a protector of fishermen, sailors on or by the sea. Hong Kong mainly focused on fishing industry in the past several years, so the fishermen of Hong Kong always went to the Tin Hau Temple making worships before their departure and after coming back. Although there are less fishermen in Hong Kong today, the tradition has still been inherited and developed. As one of the most famous folk festivals, Tin Hau Festival is greatly welcomed by Hong Kong citizens held annually on the 23rd of the third lunar month, as this is the date of Tin Hau’s birthday.

With more than 70 temples dedicated to Tin Hau, Hong Kong has many kinds of celebrations during the festival each year. In Shap Pat Heung in Yuen Long, there is a colorful parade, lion dances and a raffle. There are also celebrations in Joss House Bay, where the oldest Tin Hau Temple in Hong Kong is located. Traditionally, local people and visitors would flock to any one of Tin Hau temples all over Hong Kong to offer libations and gratitude for her protection. They also offer joss sticks to pray for a successful life. Some People also hang colorful flags upon their ships and barges.

Additionally, during the festival, fishermen or other people living around the sea may build arenas with all sizes holding so that they can have and enjoy the Cantonese opera. Built with bamboos, such kind of arena is rare but well-preserved in Hong Kong. Therefore, it will be a great chance to appreciate the beauty of traditional art through the combination of bamboo-made arena and Cantonese opera.
