Introduction to Wuhou Temple (武侯祠)

Wuhou Temple is one of the most famous tourist sites in Chengdu. It is located in southern suburb of Chengdu. The Wuhou Temple, also known as the Temple of Marquis, was first built during the Tang Dynasty and was rebuilt in 1672. Wuhou Temple was first constructed to be dedicated to Zhuge Liang, who is a famous historic figure in China and was the chancellor and military strategist of the Shu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms Period. The temple is also dedicated to Liu Bei, the emperor of Shu as it was first built next to the temple of Liu Bei and the two temples were combined during the Ming Dynasty.

The Wuhou Temple occupies an area of 37,000 square meters. The construction of the Wuhou temple applied a simple structure running from south to north with five sections, including the Gate, the Second Gate, the Hall of Liu Bei, the Hall of Zhuge Liang, and the corridor. There are clay sculptures and statues of Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, and other officials of the Shu Kingdom in the temple.

Wuhou Temple is an interesting but tranquil place to spend some casual time and learn the glorious history. The temple has beautiful and nostalgic environment with the ancient cypress trees and red walls. Many inscribed stone tablets are found in the temple and they have great historical values. Among these tablets, the most famous and valuable one is the Tablet of Triple Success which was set up in 805 AD and was measured 144 inches high and 37 inches wide. This tablet has China’s finest ancient literature and craftsmanship with the text of the inscription penned by Pei Du, a famous official of the Tang Dynasty, calligraphy by Liu Gongchuo, one of China’s most famous calligraphers, and inscribed by Lu Jian, a famous engraver.
