Introduction to Xixi National Wetland Park (西溪湿地)

Xixi National Wetland Park is a major tourist attraction in Hangzhou and also one of the most popular site to see for tourists traveling to Hangzhou. As a rare urban wetland, Xixi National Wetland Park is especially charming for its beautiful scenery, rich ecological resources, and abundant cultural heritages.

Located in west of Hangzhou, Xixi Wetland is about 6 kilometers from Hangzhou downtown are and about 5 kilometers from Hangzhou’s most famous tourist site the West Lake. Xixi has a very long history and can be dated back to 1,800 years ago during the Han Dynasty. As the first national wetland in China, Xixi is one of the “Three Xi’s” in Hangzhou with the other two being Xihu (West Lake) and Xiling (Seal Engraver’s Society). 

Xixi is a rare urban wetland and it attracts tourists mainly for its gorgeous simple and elegant natural landscapes. Also there are many human landscapes to enjoy. The most famous sites in Xixi are the Three Causeways, including Causeway Fu, Causeway Shou, and Causeway Lu. Also there are ten major sights in Xixi, including Autumn Snow Hut, Xixi Thatching, Xixi Plum Villa, Plum and Bamboo Manor, Xixi Water Attic, Deep Pool Mouth, Anchorage Thatching, and Hazy Fisher Village.

Xixi Wetland is reputed for its four distinct features of coldness, wildness, simplicity, and elegance. Xixi Wetland covers a land of 60 square kilometers with dense distribution of watercourses, streams, ponds, lakes and swamps. Water is the soul of Xixi with 70% of the area covered by water. The gorgeous views of water way, wild weeds, trees, bridges, duck, waterfowls, and rural landscapes are really fascinating. Xixi is quite a tranquil place to escape from the noisy city. Also its picturesque scenery makes it an ideal to get inspirations for artists, painters, and poets.

Another thing in Xixi that could not be missed out is the Dragon Boat contest held in Jiang Village in Xixi Wetland. It is one of the largest dragon boat festivals in South China and attract numerous people around Xixi even competitors from other places in China. This is a great chance to get to know the Chinese traditional culture by watching the contest.

Travel Tips 

  • Better avoid visit during Chinese holidays for it will be very crowded here.
  • It takes about 4-6 hours by foot to visit around here. It is recommended to visit by both walking and boat to save your energy.
