Introduction to Longji Rice Terraces (龙脊梯田)

Longji Rice Terraces, also known as Longsheng Rice Terraces, is one of the most beautiful rice terrace in China and also it is one of the most popular tourist attractions for tourists traveling to Guilin. Longji Rice Terraces are located about 80 kilometers north of Guilin in Heping District, Longsheng County of Guilin Prefecture.

The Longji Rice Terraces were firstly built in the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368) and completed in the early Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). The terraces were constructed along the slope winding from the riverside up to the mountain top at the altitude between 600 to 800 meters. Longji means dragon’s backbone in Chinese and Longji Rice Terraces got its name because the rice terraces looks like a dragon’s scales while the summit of the mountain range resembles the backbone of the dragon.

Longji Rice Terraces offer spectacular in the four different seasons. When water is irrigated into the fields in the spring, the terraces look like glittering chains or ribbons hung on the hillsides. The fantastic scenery of glittering terraces shining in the sun is something should not be missed out. Summer is the best time to see the green terraces and experience the vigor when the grain is growing. The Longji Rice Terraces are much more fascinating in the autumn when the rice is ripe and the mountainsides carpeted with golden yellow fields. The harvest of rice at the terraces should be something fun to enjoy. Views of the terraces in the winter can be plain. But when there snows and the whole mountain covered with layers of white snow, the sights can be very charming.

Besides the fantastic scenery of the rice terraces, Longji is also a great destination to experience the authentic culture and life of the local ethnic minorities. People living in Longji are mainly Zhuang and Yao. The wooden houses of the unique Zhuang and Yao styles, the beautiful ethnic costumes local women wearing, and the singing and dancing performances are something very interesting to enjoy. Tourists can even stay with local families to experience the original ethnic cultures and customs.
