Anhui Province, known as Wan for short, is situated in the southeast of China. With an area of 139,400 square kilometers, Anhui Province is adjacent to six provinces, including Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, Henan and Shandong. Hefei City is the capital of Anhui Province.

Geography and Climate

Anhui is located in the lower reaches of Yangtze River and Hui River. Topography of Anhui is quite diversified in different region. Plains, hills and lower mountains take the priorities in its featured geography. Generally Anhui is high in southwest with Dabie Mountains and a series of hills and mountains occupying the southern east part of Anhui Province and low in the northeast with North China Plain in the north and Huai River watershed in the north-central part. Within Anhui Province, there are famous mountains like Mount Huangshan, Mount Jiuhua, Mount Tianzhu, Mount Langya, Mount Qiyun and Dabie Mountain, the highest peak of Anhui is Lotus Mountain with a altitude of 1864.7 meters. Yangtze River and Huai River are the two major rivers in Anhui. The largest lake in Anhui is Lake Chao which is located in the center of the province.

With such a diversified geography, Anhui differs in climate from north to south. Climate of semi-humid monsoon of warm temperate and subtropical humid monsoon characterizes distinctive four seasons in the province.


The long history of Anhui has fertilized thick cultures and rich folk customs in Anhui. Huizhou Culture and Tongcheng School from Anhui have played influential roles in Chinese culture. Huangmeixi and Huiju are two forms of traditional Chinese operas that are popular across China and have made great contribution to the development of Chinese opera and culture.
