Sichuan Province, short as Shu, lies in the southwest of China and the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. It borders Chongqing to the east, Qinghai, Gansu and Shaanxi to the north, Yunnan and Guizhou to the south, Tibet to the west. It covers a land of 485,000 square kilometers. Chengdu serves as its capital city.

Geography and climate

Geography in Sichuan Province is diversified with plains, hills, mountains and plateaus. Terrain of Sichuan declines from the high west to the low east as there are plateaus and hills in the west of altitudes more than 3,000 meters, and basins and hills in the east of altitudes between 500 to 2,000 meters. Climate in Sichuan is greatly variable due to the varied landforms, yet it generally belongs to a monsoon climate. Climate in the eastern of Sichuan Basin has a humid subtropical climate with long, hot, damp summers and short, temperate, dry and cloudy winters. But the western mountainous areas of the province get a sunny climate with short, temperate winters and warm to hot summers.


Culture in Sichuan is greatly rich and diversified because of its multinational ethnics. Sichuan's culture could be divided into four culture zones, namely Ba Culture Zone, Shu Culture Zone, Panzhihua-Xichang Culture Zone and West Sichuan Plateau Culture Zone. Its long history and highly developed culture and civilization have made great contribution to China's history and culture. Sichuan Opera, as an indispensible part of Sichuan culture, has gained widely fame in China. Also the Sichuan cuisine and Shu Embroidery are another two hot culture elements in China.
