Introduction to Honghe Hani Rice Terraces (红河哈尼梯田)
These spectacular terraces cascade down the slopes of the towering Ailao Mountains to the banks of the Hong River. It covers an area of 1,000,000 acres, stretching over four counties, Yuanyang, Honghe, Jinpin, and Lvchun, with the main area in Yuanyang. The terraces rise by 3,000 steps at varying angles from a shallow 15 degrees to a steep 75 degrees, forming a magnificent landscape that is rare both at home and abroad. Over the past 1,300 years, the Hani people have developed a complex system of channels to bring water from the forested mountaintops to these terraces. In 2013, the terraces was inscribed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site, the 45th in China.
The well known Yuanyang Rice Terraces is the most popular part of Hani Rice Terraces.
