Introduction to Barkhor Street (八阔街)

Barkhor Street is an area of narrow streets and a public square located around Jokhang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet. The Barkor is a popular devotional circumabulation for pilgrims and locals. The walk was about one kilometre long and encircled the entire Jokhang, the former seat of the State Oracle in Lhasa is called the Muru Nyingba Monastery, and a number of nobles' houses which include Tromzikhang and Jamkhang.

There were four large incense burners in the four cardinal directions, with incense burning constantly, to make the gods happy to protecting the Jokhang. The Tromzikhang market is busy in Barkhor, and the area is a major tourist attraction.

Because the Jokhang Temple has been a symbolic center of Tibetan protest since 1987, the Barkhor has also seen many demonstrations. In 1989, when year the 14th Dalai Lama won the Nobel Peace Prize, pro-Dalai Lama residents threw tsampa around the Barkhor to celebrate. After the Central government denounced the prize, residents who continued such demonstrations were arrested. The square was briefly closed by riot police during the 2008 Lhasa violence.

There is more to Barkhor Street than just a place for pilgrims to walk. Barkhor Street, which is also often called the "Window of Tibet", is famous for its shopping. Barkhor Street gives visitors a great insight into traditional Tibetan culture by selling it to them. The shops and booths along the street are filled with all sorts of items unique to Tibet.

The Barkhor of Lhasa is still home to many traditional style streets where visitors can roam and snap pictures. Roads are paved with stones that have been ground by hand Houses are built according to traditional Tibetan style with colorful prayer flags fluttering in the breeze. Most Tibetan people are wearing their traditional Tibetan dresses. The senior citizens walk slowly, quietly chanting a piece of Buddhist scripture whilst revolving their prayer wheels.
