Introduction to Beijing Guozijian

Beijing Guozijian Street was also known as Chengxian Street during the Qing Dynasty and is one of the most symbolic historical streets of Beijing. Located in Dongcheng District of Beijing, Guozijian Street is famous due to the location of Beijing Guozijian the former Beijing Imperial Academy and Yonghe Lama Temple. The entrance of Guozijian Street is marked with a memorial archway dedicated to education. 

Beijing Guozijian (Beijing Imperial Academy) was first built in 1306 during the Yuan Dynasty. During the reign of the Ming Dynasty Emperors Yongle and Zhengtong, Beijing Guozijian was reconstructed and renovated on a large scale. Since the Yuan Dynasty Beijing Guozijian was the official national central institute of learning in ancient Chinese dynasties. From the Yuan Dynasty right through to the Qing Dynasty, Beijing Guozjian remained the highest institute of learning in China. During the imperial times the Emperor would visit the Guozijian to read Confucius classics to the students. Other attractions located near Beijing Guozijian are the Yonghe Lama Temple and Confucius Temple.

1. You have the choice of taking Subway Line 2 or 5, getting off at Yonghe Lamasery (Yonghe Gong) Station. Leave the station taking Exit D and walk south.
