Introduction to Longqing Gorge Ice Festival (隆庆峡谷冰雪节) Beijing Longqing Gorge (Longqingxia) is well known in winter for its outdoor gallery of massive blocks of ice carved into animals and figures of all shapes and sizes. Illuminated at night the ice carvings create one of those rare must see to experience visuals. The mountains around the Longqing Gorge will also be illuminated, forming a lighting Great Wall - a beautiful background for the Ice Lantern Wonderland in the middle basin. Performances and toboggan add to the fun of the Longqing Gorge Ice festival. Longqing Gorge’s winter wonderland doesn’t quite match the famous ice sculpture festival in Harbin. However, it is a fun option for families who are in Beijing and who want to spend the day seeing the amazing ice sculptures.
The Longqing Gorge Ice Festival begins each year on 15th January and finishes on 29th February. However, with temperatures rising each year, the festival's window is getting smaller, so make sure you call ahead to check exact dates if you plan on visiting. Over 400 ice sculptures made by both Chinese and foreign artists are exhibited there. |
