Introduction to Kang Youwei Former Residence (康有为故居)
The Former Residence of Kang Youwei is a key cultural heritage site protected by the national government and well-known across China and abroad. The Former Residence of Kang Youwei includes Kang Youwei’s memorial hall, his actual former residence, the Kang Family Shrine, Zhanru Building, Song House and a lotus pool, altogether occupying an area of more than 20,000 square meters. The site remains as one of the most popular Foshan tourist attractions.
The Former Residence of Kang Youwei has two floors of exhibition halls chronicling Kang’s life experiences: his assiduous studies in his boyhood, his commitment to serving his country in his youth, petitioning the government for constitutional reform and modernization in his middle age, exiling himself after the failure of reform, founding the Society for Strengthening China and writing books to expound his theories. The residence paints a portrait of a man striving for the truth.
In 1986 the construction of the Kang Youwei Memorial Hall in the house next to an area of 599 square meters, equipped in both Chinese and English Kang Youwei life exhibition. In 1989 June, the former residence of Kang Youwei by the people's Government of Guangdong Province is listed as key cultural relics protection units. In 1996 November by the State Council as a national key cultural relics protection units, is also listed the patriotism education base for the city and Nanhai District, Foshan.
With the further implementation of historical and cultural city of Foshan construction continues to accelerate the pace of the South China Sea and Culture District. The memorial has a new image, convenient traffic and rich history and culture attracting more and more tourists at home and abroad. Located in Danzao Town, Nanhai City, Su Cun, the former residence of Kang Youwei, is one of the only two national key cultural relics protection units (Foshan City, another for Foshan ancestral temple).
