Introduction to Jiaxiu Pavilion (甲秀楼)
Jiaxiu Pavilion is a building on a giant stone on the Nanming River, south of Guiyang city. It was first built in Ming Dynasty, and was reconstructed many times, the current architecture was rebuilt in 1909. There is a stone arch bridge named Fuyu (Floating Jade) connecting the Jiaxiu Pavilion with the river bank.
The Jiaxiu Pavilion in Guiyang has three stories and measures 20 meters high, with three eaves and a pointed top, containing carved windows and red lattices and upturned eaves on all sides. Downstairs is the Floating Jade Bridge which spans both north and south banks. Under the bridge, the clear blue swirling water forms a pool named Hanbi. When night falls with all the lights on, the outline of the pavilion and the bridge are reflected in the river as if it were a fairyland.
Guiyang Jiaxiu Pavilion features unique construction in China’s historic architecture with three eaves, four angles, and single pyramid roof. There are 12 stone columns holding the eaves. Ascend the pavilion and overlook the landscape. You can have a bird’s view of Guiyang City. The latest news is that it is free open to the public.
On May 25, 2006, as an ancient building from the Ming Dynasty, Jiaxiu Pavilion was approved and listed in the 6th National Key Cultural Relic Protection Units by the State Council. The building has experienced six large-scale repairs, and the existing building was rebuilt in the first year of Xuantong (1909). Jiaxiu Pavilion still stands after four centuries of wind and rain; it witnessed Guiyang history and also Guiyang's cultural development.
In this Jiaxiu pavilion, tourists can have a look at the rich collection of stone engravings, calligraphy works, paintings and woodworks by ancient artists. Among them, there is a long antithetical couplet with 206 characters written by Liu Yushan, a member of the Imperial Academy from Guiyang, in the Qing Dynasty, which has 26 more characters than that one in Daguan Pavilion in Kunming, which claims to be the longest one in the world.
