Introduction to Jingci Temple (净慈寺)

Jingci Temple is one of the Four Ancient Temples of West Lake and the second important Buddhist temple in Hangzhou. Jingci Temple is especially famous for the “Evening Bell of Nanping Hill” which is one of the ten scenes of West Lake.

Located at the foot of Huiri Peak Nanping Hill, Jingci Temple together with Lingyin Temple is called the jewel of the southern and northern Hills. Jingci Temple was firstly built in 954 AD by Qian Hongji of Wuyue Dynasty for a famous monk Yongming Yanshou. Jingci Temple was originally called Huiri Yongming Temple and was renamed Jingci Temple during South Song Dynasty. The temple was destroyed and have undergone several reconstructions. Most part of the current temple was built in 1980’s.

Jingci Temple is divided into the front, middle, and back three large halls. The Mahavira Hall which is solemn and magnificent is the most significant building in Jingci Temple. In front of the Mahavira Hall there locates the well which is known for its folklore of delivering timbre. The newly copper bell which weighs 100 kilograms is a special highlight in Jingci Temple. On this bell there carved The Lotus Sutra, which has 68,000 characters.

The scene of Evening Bell at Nanping Hill can be heard at dusk. The sound of the bell is so striking and powerful that can be heard across the West Lake. Also Jingci Temple is situated right across the road of Leifeng Pagoda, so you will not miss out them.

  • It is close to Leifeng Pagoda and West Lake, you can easily get these places from Jingci Temple.
