Introduction to Yau Ma Tei (油麻地)

Yau Ma Tei is located at south of Kowloon, closely linked with the Mong Kok and Tsim Sha Tsui. The three of them together make up one of Kowloon's bustling famous area-Yau Tsim Mong.

The name of Yau Ma Tei are closely related Tin Hau Temple. Yau Ma Tei has a long history, the famous Tin Hau Temple and Temple Street is located here. According to a stone tablet erected in 1870 at Tin Hau temple, it was been called " Ma Tei ". In 1875,  it was a place boat for fishermen to drying hemp rope. Many fishing vessels and hemp rope shop was set up here, So it renamed the " Yau Ma Tei ". Beside vessel maintenance, hemp rope, oars, blacksmith and wood business, there are operating groceries, barber, rice shop, brothels, opium and so on.

Like other old districts in Hong Kong, the underground and the second floor of Yau Ma Tei buildings are used for commercial, the rest of the floor is residential. Hong Kong's famous street Temple Street is in the district. A range of goods and food stalls will take up the whole Temple Street, like a night market in Taiwan. Since the price are cheaper here, and the streets is full of authentic local style. Temple has become a must-go tourist shopping spot in Hongkong.

Compared to Mong Kok, Yau Ma Tei is more local, people still maintained the traditional way of life in a large degree. If you want to get to know the Hong Kong's old life style, you should come here.

Travel Tips 

  • It is commended to explore Temple Street, which is very popular, like night market in Bangkok.
  • Better not come during Chinese holidays, for it will be extremely crowded here.
