Ramoche Monastery

 Lhasa Attractions

Ramoche Monastery is located northwest of Lhasa and is one of the key attractions of Tibet. The monastery was originally built for Princess Wencheng of the Tang Dynasty who married King Songtsän Gampo of Tibet. The original temple design exhibited Tang architecture and was built facing the east to express the homesickness of Princess Wencheng. The temple is considered the sister temple of Jokhang Temple which is about 500 meters away.

The temple occupies an area of 4,000 square meters and was built in the 7th century. However, the original temple had been destroyed numerous times due to invasions. The temple which remains today was built in 1474 and has been restored many times but it no longer resembles the original Tang architecture. There are many Buddhist sculptures and figures within the monastery, but the famous Sakyamunyi brought to Lhasa by Princess Wencheng which was put in the Ramoche Monastery is now in Jokhang Temple.
