Introduction to Linyin Temple (林隐寺)

Lingyin Temple, literally translated as Temple of Soul’s Retreat, is one of the largest Buddhist temples in China and also one of the most popular tourist destinations in Hangzhou. It is located on the northwest of West Lake at Hangzhou. 

Lingyin Temple was originally built during Eastern Jin Dynasty (317 - 420AD) by an Indian Monk. The temple got its prosperity in Kingdom of Wu Yue during the Five Dynasties Period when the temple had 9 multi-storey buildings, 18 pavilions, 72 halls and more than 3,000 monks inhabited. Later the temple suffered several damages and restorations, and the current buildings of the temple was rebuilt on its original style.

Lingyin Temple is one of the most significant Buddhist temples in southern China area. The main complex of Lingyin Temple is consisted of The Hall of the Heavenly Kings , Grand Hall of the Great Sage, Hall of the Medicine Buddha, Sutra Library, Hauyan Hall, and Hall of the Five Hundred Arhats. Also there are other buildings like the West and East Winding Corridors.

The Hall of the Heavenly Kings which is a double-eaved building is the formal entrance of Lingyin Temple. At this hall, there are a plaque which was written by Kangxi Emperor of Qing Dynasty in the front door, and principal statues are the Maitreya, Skanda Buddha, and four heavenly kings. The Grand Hall of the Great Sage that is the principal hall of Lingyin Temple. The statue of Shakyamuni in this hall is the largest wooden Buddhist stature in China.

Containing a fantastic collection of architectural and artistic cultural relics featured by numerous pagodas, Buddhist grottoes and Buddhist literature, Lingyin Temple is reputed as one of the wealthiest temples in China. Many of the buildings and pogodas in Lingyin Temple are built during Tang, Southern Song, and Ming dynasties. Also there are rich ancient Buddhist carvings, sculptures and grottoes found in Lingyin Temple. 

Lying between Flying Peak and Beigao Peak, Lingyin Temple is reputed for its tranquil surroundings. Lingyin Temple has a best time to visit of all seasons. While we would recommend you visit Lingyin Temple early in the morning when there are few visitors and you can experience the most tranquil moments in the temple.

Travel Tips 

1. Try to avoid visiting during Chinese festivals and holidays as it will be extremely crowded.

2. Ticket free for Klippe before 5:30 in the early morning.

3. Take battery cart inside the temple if you need. Fee: RMB 3, Line: Down Tianzhu -Tianzhuxiang City - Middle Tianzhu - Fayun Ancient Village.

4. A Monastic Dining Hall is located next to the Lingyin Temple, with local flavor and reasonable price. Average price per person: RMB 50.
