Longmen Grottoes

 Luoyang Attractions

Longmen Grottoes were listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in the list of World Heritage Sites in November 2000. It is one of the best examples of Chinese Buddhist art and famous China tourist attractions.

Located 12 kilometers south of Luoyang in Henan Province, there are tens of thousands of statues of Buddha and his disciples. The images were carved into caves excavated from the limestone cliffs of the Xiangshan and Longmenshan mountains, running east and west. There are as many as 100,000 statues within the 1,400 caves, ranging from 1 inch to 57 feet in height.

They are an outstanding manifestation of human artistic creativity. The Longmen Grottoes illustrate the perfection of a long-established art form which was to play a highly significant role in the cultural evolution of this region of Asia. The exceptional stone carvings of the Longmen Grottoes reflect the high cultural level and sophisticated society of Tang Dynasty.

Longmen Grottoes is located between the east and west cliffs in Longmen Valley, 12.5 kilometers south from Luoyang City, Henan Province. As the east cliff sits opposite to the west cliff and Yishui River runs between them, the two cliffs look like a stone gate, hence the name Yijue (the stone gate of Yishui River). After the Tang Dynasty (618-907), it was generally referred to as Longmen (dragon gate).

Situated at the communications center with picturesque scenery of green maintains and blue rivers and a pleasant climate, Longmen has been a scenic spot over the centuries. Moreover, ancient Chinese chose to cut grottoes in this place, taking advantage of the fine quality of the mountain rocks.
