Introduction to Nanjing Road

Nanjing Road is located in Huangpu District of Shanghai and is one of the busiest streets in China where an estimated 1,700,000 people visit the street each day. Nanjing Road is said to be the world’s longest shopping district at an estimated 5.5 kilometers. The history of Nanjing Road dates back to 1845 when it was originally named Park Lane. Nanjing Road was first the British Concession and then it was transformed into an International Settlement. With large volumes of imported foreign goods, it became one of the earliest shopping streets in Shanghai. Today Nanjing Road is separated into two sections Nanjing Road East and Nanjing Road West.

East Nanjing Road is now a flourished commercial zone and the centre section of The Bund. Along East Nanjing Road is the famous Peace Hotel and other old Shanghai department stores. There is also the Nanjing Road pedestrian mall and Central Market close by. East Nanjing Road ends at People’s Park which was previously the Shanghai Race Course. West Nanjing Road is made up of luxurious malls, offices, Shanghai Exhibition Centre and many shops. Jing’an Temple is also close to Nanjing West Road but over the years there has been constant development where many of the old estates have been demolished or used as government offices.
