Introduction to The Temple of Six Banyan Trees (六榕寺)

The Temple of Six Banyan Trees is one of the four Buddhist temples in Guangzhou. The Temple of Six Banyan Trees was originally built in 537 during the Liang Dynasty. With its rich collection of cultural relics and ancient history, Temple of the Six Banyan Trees gained its reputation both at home and abroad.

The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees was originally called the Baozhuangyan Temple and was renamed as Liu Rong (Six Banyan Trees) during the Song Dynasty by the historically famous literati Su Shi because of the six banyan trees he saw in the temple. The main structure of the temple is the Flowery Pagoda or called Six Banyan Pagoda which was originally constructed in 1097. After it went through reconstruction after damage and the current one was restored in 1900.

The complex of the temple is in Chinese traditional style. It is consisted of the mountain gate, the Six Banyan Pagoda, the Tianwang Hall, Daxiong Baodian Hall, the Laughing Buddha, and Weituo Hall. The nine-floored pagoda in red and white is the main attraction of the temple. Daxiong Baodian Hall is the main hall of the temple and it has three copper Buddha. In the Tianwang Hall, there stands a smiling Laughing Buddha.

The Temple of Six Banyan Trees is a one of Buddhism center for people in Guangzhou. In Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival, the temple is very busy with many people coming to visit and burning incense to get good luck.
