Introduction to Tartar Mosque (塔塔尔寺)

Located in the end of Jiefang Road of Urumqi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the magnificent Tartar Mosque was built by the local Tartar people in 1897 entirely from donations. The mosque is the center for peaceful Islamic activities in Urumqi City.

Covering a total area of 3,000 square meters, the community worship hall is over 800 square meters and can accommodate thousands of people. The mosque is very beautiful and all throughout decorated with exquisite porches, carvings, and paintings.

Foreign visitors can visit the temple if contact first and watch Muslim worship in the rear of the chaple. According to Islamic law, women can not enter the mosque. But in Tartar Mosque, the female visitors can also visit if have the prior consent.

The name of the mosque comes from the large silver tower which is built to commemorate the founder of the Yellow Sect Tsongkhapa,called as "Dagon Benxian Bahrain" in Tibetan which means "hundreds of thousands lion roar Maitreya Buddha Temple."
