Introduction to Xian Stele Forest

Stele Forest, also known as Forest of Stele Museum or Beilin Museum, is a museum dedicated to displaying a large collection of stone steles, epigraphs and stone sculptures from ancient times. It is a popular historic site in Xian and a great place for tourists to get to know the glorious Chinese history and culture.

The Stele Forest was first built in 1087 to preserve Kaiyuan Stone Scriptures of the Tang Dynasty, and it has undergone several renovations in late dynasties with the increasing number of steles. With its collection of 3,000 steles, the Stele Forest has the largest collection of steles in China. Among these steles, the most famous ones are Kaicheng Shi Jing Steles, Nestorian Stele, and Shitai Xiao Jing Steles.

The Stele Forest museum is divided into seven exhibition halls, which mainly exhibits the works of calligraphy, painting, and historical records. Also the large collection of inscribed tablets is an outstanding feature of the Stele Forest. These tablet inscriptions which tell about the religions, life styles, and historical facts of ancient times are lively historical records to know the real history and society.
