Xian Great Mosque
Introduction to Xian Great Mosque
Xian Great Mosque is located at No.30 Huajue Alley and is one of the oldest mosques in Xian. The Great Mosque was established in 742AD and was first built during the Tang Dynasty. Islam was first introduced into Xian through the Arab merchants of the Silk Road. With many Arab merchants settling in the city the practice of Islam spread amongst the local people and the mosque was built for their practice of the religion.
Throughout the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasty the mosque was expanded and became a symbol of the different architectural designs of the dynasties. The architecture of the Great Mosque has adopted Chinese architecture and design with only some Arabic decorations and writing. The Great Mosque remains one of the four largest Mosques in China. In 1988 the mosque was enlisted as one of the protected monuments of Chinese culture. Today the Great Mosque is one of the most popular attractions of Xian and is still the main place for the Muslim community in Xian.
