Introduction to Kumbum Monastery (塔尔寺)

Kumbum Monastery is also named Ta'er Monastery. It was built in 1577 more than 150 years after the death of Tsong Khapa (1357-1419), founder of the Yellow Hat Sect to commemorate him. It is now one of the most important Tibetan Buddhist monasteries as well as a famed place of interest in China.

Kumbum Monastery equals "Gongben" in Tibetan language, which means 10,000 figures of Buddha. Among the four monastic colleges of faculties (dratsang) under Kumbum, the Debate College or Faculty for Logic, the Shadupling Dratsang is the largest. The other three colleges are the Tantric College, the Medical College, and Kalachakra College.

Kumbum Monastery covers an area of 144,000 square meters (approximately 36 acres) surrounded by mountains. It accommodates 9,300 rooms and 52 halls. This splendid complex of buildings on mountain slopes demonstrate both Han and Tibetan achitecture style. Among buildings inside the monastery, the Great Hall of the Golden Roof and the Great Hall of Mediation are the most magnificent.
