Introduction to Xintiandi

Xintiandi is one of Shanghai’s top tourist attractions and a symbol of modern Shanghai. Xintiandi is located on Huaihai Zhong Road and is one of the top entertainment spots in Shanghai. Xintiandi is unique as a part of the former French Concession and the traditional Shikumen buildings and lanes were renovated to complete the distinct architecture of the area. Xintiandi is now filled with the trendiest stores, coffee shops, bars and galleries and with no traffic the area is great for tourists who want to relax.

Shikumen buildings date back to the 1800’s and was a result of East Meets West architecture. By the early 1900’s the buildings were houses for local residents, however with time Shikumen became outdated and fell into disrepair. In 1997 plans to revive the Shikumen buildings and create the new area into a new modern leisure hotspot of Shanghai was taken on by Hong Kong Shui On Group. Under the advice of American architect Benjamin Wood the area was renovated opposed to the original plan to build high rise buildings.

Xintiandi is now divided into two areas known as the North Block and the South Block. The South Block is the shopping and entertainment area that covers 25,000 square meters. There are world famous brands, restaurants and boutiques which are great for tourists. The North Block is made up of the historical Shikumen and architectures of different European styles. There are several international standard restaurants that can also be found at the North Block.
