Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, as a part of China’s most beautiful national park Wulingyuan, is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Zhangjiajie and also one of the most beautiful places in China. It is located in Zhangjiajie City, which is in the northwest of Hunan Province in central-south China. The forest park is China’s first authorized forest park.

As the highlight of Zhangjiajie tourism and the essence of Wulingyuan, Zhangjiajie National Forest outstands for its exceptional natural beauty. The forest park is exceptional notable for the many quartz-sandstone pillars and peaks. Featured with soaring peaks and pillars, limestone caves and canyons, tranquil streams, lush forests, abundant flora and fauna, and rich wildlife, the delicate, wild and majestic Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a place should not miss out when traveling to China.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park covers an area of 48 square kilometers and is consisted of five major scenic areas, including Yellow Stone Village, Golden Whip Stream, Yaozi Village, Yuanjiajie, and Yangjiajie. Each of these scenic areas have their highlighted scenic sights.

Yellow Stone Village

Yellow Stone Village is located in the west of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and stands in the north of Golden Whip Stream. As a large mountain village the height of 1,200 meters above sea level, Yellow Stone Village is the largest and most concentrated observing spot of forest park. Main attractions in Yellow Stone Village includes Trail in Fir Woods, Imperial Edict and the Precious Box, Needle Peak, the Southern Gate to Heaven, and Five-Finger Peak.

Golden Whip Stream

Golden Whip Stream that is located at the foot of the mountain in the south of the forest park claims to have the most fascinating scenery in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. This stream is about 7 kilometers in length and usually takes 2 hours to walking along the stream and appreciate the enchanting scenery alongside.

Golden Whip Stream has very clear water. Alongside the stream there are verdant mountains, tranquil valleys, pristine forests, and abundant flora to enjoy. The Welcoming Guest Rock, Golden Whip Rock, Reunion Rock and the Purple Grass Pond are the main scenic spots in this scenic area.

Yaozi Village

Yaozi Village is situated in the northeast of the forest park. This village is 1,500 meters above the sea level and it is famous for its steep and dangerous cliffs. With numerous precipitous cliffs, verdant pristine forests, and no cable car available, Yaozi Village has become a great place for challenging hiking. Also the broad views of a wonderland of numerous karst pillars at the broad viewing platform in Yaozi Village is attractive to tourists.


The Yuanjiajie lying in the north of the forest park between Yellow Stone Village and Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve is the most popular scenic areas among Zhangjaijie National Forest Park. With the mountains and peaks at Yuanjiajie all are nearly at the same height, Yuanjiajie is made into a natural mountain platform to view the marvelous vistas of surrounding towering peaks, grotesque pillars, and deep valleys.

Yuanjiajie is made much more popular as it contains “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” which inspired the floating mountains in the Hollywood blockbuster Avatar.

In Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, there are many spectacular scenic spots. Some of the famous ones are The First Bridge of the World, Breathtaking Mihun Stage, Back Garden, Bailong Elevator, Hanging Waterfall, Wulong Spring, and of course Avatar Hallelujah Mountains.


The Yangjiajie that is located in western part of the forest park is a newly developed scenic area. Covered with dense vegetation, Yuanjiajie has a 95% of vegetation coverage. Yangjiejie is noted for its steepness and it requires challenging hiking for tourists visiting there. Main sights in Yangjiajie includes Xiangzhi Stream, Longquan Gorge, and Baihou Valley.
