 2013-12-25    Ada    Tours    Dayu    697

Leave alone those famous poets written about the beauty and brave plums, and imagine how wonderful it will be to see the delicate blossoms burst with their lives in cold snow and frog. The plum blossom, which is known as the meihua, is one of the most beloved flowers in China and has been frequently depicted in Chinese art and poetry for centuries. The plum blossom is seen as a symbol of winter and a harbinger of spring.

When it comes to heralding the arrival of spring, cherry blossoms get all the glory. But the hardier and more modest plum blossoms are just as pretty and smell twice as nice. Searching for Plum Blossoms in Snow, is a popular Chinese folk song with music written by the Chinese Composer Huang Tzu and lyrics by Liu Xue An. The song describes riding a donkey into the snow to gather plum blossoms and hearing the chiming off bells, which reminds most people who have saw the little brave creatures of the happy hour appreciating plums in cold winter. In case you didn’t experience sun fun ever, Dayu county will be a good place to get it started.

Located in western Ganzhou Municipality, Jiangxi Province, Dayu County has enjoyed a reputation of "Poetic Plum Land" since ancient times and it attracts many domestic and overseas tourists and photography lovers every year.

Stretching over a month in early spring each year, Dayu showcases 35,000 plum blossom trees in 120 varieties -- including China’s oldest -- scattered in wild parks and on regular roads. As the plum trees usually grow for a long time, ancient trees are found everywhere throughout Dayu county. Because it blossoms in the cold winter, the plum blossom is regarded as one of the "Three Friends of Winter", along with pine, and bamboo. The plum blossom is also regarded as one of the "Four Gentlemen" of flowers in Chinese art together with the orchid, chrysanthemum, and bamboo.

Towards the end of each winter, the tiny plum blossom braves snow and frost to burst forth on barren twigs -- long before all the other flowers make their reappearance. The strong contrast between dead plants with few grey leaves or even bold with nothing, flowering plums is a kind of miracle during the whole winter, especially when you see the hundreds of thousands of flowering plum trees at the same time. It is a symbol of rebirth and growth and when depicted in ancient Chinese artwork represents resilience and perseverance in the face of diversity.

Apart for her brave and beauty, plums are pretty useful. The fruit of the tree is used in Chinese, Japanese and Korean cooking in juices, as a flavoring for alcohol, as a pickle and in sauces. It is also used in traditional medicine.

Not like other travel attractions, Dayu county holds amazing scenery, but it still remains relatively little known, so it makes for a relaxing getaway whenever the jostling crowds in other places get to you. Make your date at Dayu plum forests, the moments you spent here will be eternal.
