For most who have thought about travelling to China or have friends that have made the long journey across the globe to the middle kingdom have no doubt heard about Yunnan. So you’re maybe wondering what all the hype is about Yunnan? Are people just totally overrating this place? So today I will be giving you a breakdown, rundown, highlight, summary however you would like to interpret this piece of writing about Yunnan and you can come to your own conclusions and rate the place yourself.

First of all let’s figure out where Yunnan is situated so at least we know we’re on the right bearings! Yunnan is located in the southwest of China with Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi as its neighbors. Its other bordering neighbors also include Vietnam, Burma and Laos. So you can now probably guess why Yunnan is home to 25 of the 55 ethnic minorities of China given its location. Approximately 94% of Yunnan is mountainous so that’s why you’ll find most of the minorities are located up in the mountains.

The diversity in culture is perhaps why it’s so appealing to visitors. To be precise 1/3 of Yunnan’s population is made up of ethnic minorities so throughout the different cities you will be able to see cultural variations, customs and architecture. The Zhuang, Miao and Hui are the most talked about minority communities, however taking a trip to Yunnan you will be able to experience these unique minorities for yourself. From clothing, festivals and culture all the minorities have their own genuine beliefs that makes it all the more fascinating.

So here is the lowdown on the weather in the major cities that attract tourists from all over the world there is Kunming, Lijiang, Dali, Xishuangbanna and Honghe which are most talked about. All these cities have their own individuality and climatic variations which makes it all the more appealing. You can visit Kunming and experience the mild spring weather, Xishuangbanna is known for its tropical climate and you can admire the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the Alpine range near Lijiang. Dali renowned for the beautiful Lake Erhai experiences a breezy wind throughout the about experiencing all four seasons in the one place!

The scenery of Yunnan truly reflects spring and the beauty of the great outdoors. For example Kunming’s mild spring weather all year round means the city is always in full blossom so you will no doubt be dazzled by all the flower species! For a little heritage trail there is the Old Town of Lijiang where the culture differs greatly from other parts of China and it’s a registered UNESCO heritage site so anything branded with that can’t go wrong with it! The tropical Xishuangbanna is ideal during its Water Splashing Festival and not to mention its remarkable Tropical Botantical Garden that is home to 10 thousand tropical plant species!
