2012 Hong Kong WinterFest Commences

Named by American network CNN as one of the top 10 places to spend Christmas, Hong Kong sure does live up to its reputation as a popular destination to spend the festive season. From the 25th November to the 1st January Hong Kong is transformed into a winter wonderland minus the cold weather that is of course. The magnificent skyline of Hong Kong is turned into a Christmas fantasy with the statuesque skyscrapers and shopping malls luxuriously decorated from top to bottom. The best place to catch a glimpse or view the Christmas lights is along Tsim Sha Tsui or Victoria Harbour waterfront.

The WinterFest would not be the same if it didn’t involve some retail therapy. Known as a shopper’s paradise, the shopping malls will definitely have the ideal gifts or souvenirs available. The Landmark and Times Square are the place to head to for luxury brands and for the absolute shopaholics there is Harbour City which spans over 3 kilometers and has over 800 shops.

The spectacular goes out with a bang on New Years day with Time’s Square hosting its very own countdown. Each year Hong Kong puts on a free firework display in Victoria Harbour, which last year was said to have cost US$1 million. The best ways to view the display and to avoid the crowds is to book a harbour cruise, or head over to Avenue of Stars in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Hong Kong is the only place in Southeast Asia to be considered as a Christmas holiday destination and this is clearly reflected by the festive atmosphere that can be both felt and seen across the city.
