Ayutthaya

Ayutthaya was established in 1350 and was the second capital of the former Siam Kingdom. The city was once the center of commerce and economic prosperity between the 14th and 18th century. However, the Burmese Army burned down the city in the 18th century and forcing residents to leave. Ayutthaya was never rebuilt and what remains today is the ruins of an archaeological site. Taking a stroll through the Ayutthaya Historical Park you can catch a glimpse of the once prosperous city. The main ruins include Wat Phra Si Sanphet, the largest temple in Ayutthaya, Wat Mongkhon Bophit and Wat Phra Mahathat and the outlying Viharn Phramongkol Bophit including one of the largest Buddha statues in Thailand. The historical park was enlisted as a UNSECO Heritage Site in 1991
