Ya'an is located in Sichuan to the southwest of China. It is situated in the mountainous western fringe of the Sichuan Basin on the Qingyi River. Ya'an is approximately 80 miles southwest of Chengdu. The city is also known as the home of the giant pandas who were first discovered by French commissioners in Ya'an.
