Introduction to Mausoleum of Genghis Khan (成吉思汗陵)

The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan is a famous historical relic in Inner Mongolia. It is located in Xinjie Town, Ejen Khoruu Banner, Ordos City in Inner Mongolia. The mausoleum is devoted to Genghis Khan, a legendary hero in ancient China who united nomadic tribes in Mongolian prairie and laid the foundation for the unification of China. 

But actually the mausoleum is not the real burial place for Genghis Khan, but a cenotaph built in 1954 to commemorate Genghis Khan. Genghis Khan was buried without any marks according to his will and the real burial place is still a mystery.

The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan occupies 50,000 square meters with the main structure of three palaces in the shape of Mongolian yurts and corridors to connect the palaces. The construction of the whole mausoleum is built with strong Mongolian styles.

The main palace in the height of 26 meters is located in the middle of the three palaces. This palace is mainly devoted to the glorious history and legends of Genghis Khan. There tourists will see a tall marble statue of armor-clad Genghis Khan in 5-meter height. Behind the statue, there is a map which shows the vast territory of Mongol Empire under Genghis Khan’s rule. Also there are saddles, weapons, carts, iron pans, and other relics from the time of Genghis Khan are placed besides the statue.

Coffins of Genghis Khan’s wives are also in the main palace. For a better understanding of Genghis Khan and his glorious history, there are frescos in the corridor of the main palace, which depict significant events about him. The East Palace laid the coffins of Tolui, Genghis Khan’s fourth son, and his wife. While the West Palace collect nine banners and Su Le Ding which is known as iron spearheads. 

The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan is a sacred place for the Mongolian people to commemorate and offer sacrifice to Genghis Khan. There are four grand gatherings every year held to commemorate their hero when Mongolian people dressing up their traditional costumes and offering sacrifices of Hada, wine, food, and so on.

When traveling to the Mausoleum of Genghis Khan, tourists also have the chances to know the traditional culture and customs of the Mongolian ethnic groups. Riding horses and camels, watching performances, enjoying local food, and joining in the traditional activities of wrestling and arrow shooting, all these activities will bring you great fun.
